Be your own boss: four words that appeal to so many people.
While it’s a big step from wanting to do it to actually doing it, TMU has robust supports to help you—and many success stories that demonstrate how being your own boss can be more than just a dream.
TMU has more than 20 years of experience in delivering education, training and support for anyone wanting to learn how to start, launch and grow their own business or social venture.
And for those who don’t want to start their own enterprise, the fact is anyone can benefit from developing an entrepreneurial mindset in work and life.
The public face of the innovation ecosystem at TMU is the Zone Learning system. These are sector-focused launchpads for success where anyone can explore their innovative ideas. There are Zones focusing on clean energy, biomedical, legal innovation, design fabrication, social ventures and more. The Zones have a wealth of resources, and link people with ideas to coaches and advisors, financial resources, training and technical expertise. And perhaps best of all, they provide an environment that brings together the brightest minds in innovation.
"TMU’s Zone Learning ecosystem has been home to international success stories."
Zones have been home to international success stories including Mejuri Jewelry. Founded by business grad Noura Sakkijha in 2015, Mejuri has revolutionized the world of fine jewelry through e-commerce.
Another example: Inkbox, a temporary tattoo company founded by TMU graduate Braden Handley and his brother Tyler, was acquired in 2022 by Bic for US $65 million.
Maybe you have a passion project that you dream of developing into a part- or full-time business. In the magazine cover story, find inspiration from graduates who started new ventures across a wide range of fields.
I find it inspiring that many of the stories of successful ventures often do not include earning money as the impetus. Driving positive societal change is the motivator for many entrepreneurially minded people. And Zones at TMU are here to help. For example, psychology grad Julian Powell started Music Share for Seniors and worked with the Social Ventures Zone to develop it. This non-profit initiative now brings the joy of music to hundreds of seniors in 14 long-term care facilities.
