In a display case at TMU’s Ted Rogers School of Management, a 16-foot birch bark canoe tells a deeper story of enterprise and innovation.
Pre-colonial Indigenous communities were interconnected, enterprising nations linked by social ties, shared knowledge and vast trade routes spanning the continent. Canoes were essential transportation for trade along waterways from the St. Lawrence to the Great Lakes.
The 2025 installation of a birch bark canoe in the school celebrates that history. Commissioned from Todd Labrador, a Mi’kmaw craftsman and cultural archeologist from Nova Scotia, the canoe arrived at campus via the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ont.
