Toronto Metropolitan University President Mohamed Lachemi received the Order of Ontario at a
special event in November 2023.
Lachemi, who has led TMU since April 2016, says the award is a testament to the incredible work of the entire university community.
The recognition is the province’s highest civilian honour—bestowed upon Ontarians who have shown the highest level of excellence and achievement in any field, and whose impact has left a lasting legacy.

New law, medical schools
Lachemi was nominated following many notable achievements at TMU during his presidency, including the creation of the university’s new law school and medical school, his leadership throughout the pandemic, the university’s name change, his commitment to equity, diversity and
inclusion and more.
Looking back at the many recent accomplishments, Lachemi praises TMU’s ability to challenge the status quo “in every endeavour”, and the trust that the university has fostered with the surrounding “community, society and government,” which has, in part, helped TMU with the successful creation of both the law school and medical school.
