For Valerie Pringle (Radio and Television Arts ’74), going to Toronto Metropolitan University was the second-best decision she ever made. (Marrying her husband Andrew takes first place.) “It set me on my path—gave me an exciting career in broadcasting that has made all the difference.”
She’s expressed her love for the university over the years by working with Andrew to help it thrive. Actions include providing law school scholarships and funding the green roof on the engineering building, a visionary urban farm that grows some 10,000 lbs of produce each year.
As chair of the Blue & Gold Society, Pringle encourages others to donate, and she was proud to participate in something especially meaningful: the University Renaming Advisory Committee.
“Hearing the different perspectives has been fascinating,” she says. “We’ve been soaked in colonialism all our lives and it’s so important to listen and reimagine the future of an institution where everyone feels welcome.”
Pringle encourages others to volunteer, which is the focus of her time now. She was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2006 for her broadcasting and volunteer work.
“It’s the best thing to do, particularly at this age. Connecting with younger people is exciting, and so is seeing what a difference you can make in an institution. You always get more than you give.”
