Over the past decade, Mohamed Lachemi has guided Toronto Metropolitan University through a period of remarkable growth—expanding its footprint across the GTA, launching new schools and programs, and deepening the university's ties to the communities it serves. As his time as president and vice-chancellor draws to a close, the impact of that leadership extends well beyond the university's campuses.
To mark this moment, we asked colleagues, alumni, donors and partners from across Ontario and the broader TMU community to share what President Lachemi's leadership has meant to them and their work. From municipal and provincial leaders to university deans, board members and partners, their reflections speak to a common thread: a leader who built bridges, opened doors and left TMU stronger than he found it.
Patrick Brown
Brampton Mayor
President Lachemi has had a profound impact on Brampton, Peel Region and Ontario. The creation of the first new medical school in the GTA in more than 100 years is his most visible achievement, but it reflects something even greater: his ability to understand what a growing, diverse community needs and to bring together the partnerships required to deliver lasting change. Under his leadership, TMU has built a meaningful and expanding presence in Brampton, already improving access to care and helping drive innovation and strengthen our local economy. TMU's work in Brampton will shape the health, well-being and economic future of our community for generations to come. I personally thank Mohamed for his dedication and years of service to the people of Ontario.

Under President Lachemi's leadership, TMU has grown in stature and deepened its connections to the communities it serves. I can think of no finer representative of our university than Mohamed, whose leadership has strengthened TMU's connections and impact. His unique ability to build bridges, engage new partners and foster community has been remarkable throughout his years of service. He has led with diplomacy, a deep understanding of differences and, above all, kindness. The university he leaves behind—stronger, more connected and more deeply rooted in its communities—is his most lasting contribution.
